Nahuatlaka

(ancestral music)

Sundays 10am-12pm

Instructor: Juan Pueblo

The students will learn hands on, about the beauty and vitality of music from ancestral Mexico, and will understand the solemnity of ritualistic/ceremonial sounds through their own hearts with the voice of drums, gourds, flutes, rattles and more. Students will experience the priceless heritage from the Aztec tradition.

(traditional music of Veracruz Mex.)

Students of all levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcomed. Son Jarocho is a musical tradition from Veracruz , Mexico , combining African, indigenous and Spanish elements. Students will learn the use of La Jarana, the traditional stringed instrument used in Son Jarocho. Zapateado, the dance tradition from this region, may also be incorporated.

Instructor: Alejandro Laborde

Technical and practical concepts concerning the guitar will be covered. The fundamentals of music will be introduced to gain an understanding of the theory and how it can be applied to communicate with others while rehearsing, or performing a song or any piece of music. Students will develop their creativity, confidence, and will learn responsibilities involved in a performance. The objective is that the student will be prepared for a final performance in front of an audience (singing is optional). But most importantly, the idea is to develop an intimate relationship with your guitar. Instruction is offered for beginner and intermediate students. Electric guitar is also offered for students who wish to advance their guitar skills. Basic music theory concepts are taught through music, which students would like to learn to play.

Capoeira is an African Brazilian movement that combines dance, martial arts, music, acrobatics and self-defense. In academies around the world Capoeira is practiced in a communal setting, within a circle of players or “roda”, and set to a hypnotic, pulsing rhythm. This art form calls for intuition, skill, grace and physical strength. The class will be taught by a member of the Omulu Capoeira Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and educating through the art of Capoeira, and using Capoeira as a tool to empower young people.

Instructors: Monique Orozco & Melissa Sanvicente

Danza Azteca comes from the pre-Conquest days of Mexico and Central America . “La Danza”, as it is sometimes called, reflects n astrological, cultural, social and even spiritual infaluence. In this workshop, students of all levels will learn how to coordinate their bodies, mind and soul in a purposeful motion, while learning the basic rhythms and steps of the Mexica indigenous drum and the meaning of Nahuatl language songs. Students will learn the Mexika dance tradition step by step as well as the cosmological underpinnings of the steps and rituals. Monique will take the lead in teaching the dances and Melissa will lead the teaching of the drumming and songs.

Students of all levels of experience from begginers to advanced are welcomed. Son Jarocho is a musical tradition descendant of Vera Cruz, Mexico. La jarrana is the traditional stringed instrument used in Son Jarocho. Jarranas will be provided for students that do not own one. Workshops are co-facilitated by Leah Gallegos and Mapache. On July 10, 2008 Young Warriors will be meeting at the pacoima community center parking lot to be picked up to go to the Van Nuys Court house @ 5:00 p.m. Young Warriors will be joining LAANE (Los Angeles Alliance for a new Economy) in the Proteus to stop fresh&easy on sepulvida from  obtaining a liqueur licenses. Gallery & Art Workshop

Galeria Y Taller de Arte

Saturdays 6pm

Workshops take place offsite at 10310 Foothill Blvd.

(2 buildings west from Tia Chucha's)

Participants will be learning and practicing pencil sketching to understand such subjects as:

light, and shading, proportion, perspectiv4e, composition, etc. Participants will also be introduced to the color theory and application on small canvases and large size panels to practice and learn about the principles of painting murals. Ocassionaly the class will also learn about the history of art and the most valued stories on the life and work of past and contemporary different artists.
